Dealing With Thinning Hair — The Natural Way.

Home/Dealing With Thinning Hair — The Natural Way.

Hair loss is an emotional journey, fraught with loss of confidence, panic that the loss will continue, and unease about which steps to take next. There are many treatments on the market, some effective, and some… not so much.

Many of the patients who come into our office have been struggling with hair loss for months or years, and have already tried the creams, masks, supplements, and medications that are commonly recommended. Either because these therapies haven’t worked, because the treatments caused unwelcome side effects, or because the patient is looking for a more natural approach that aligns with their holistic health values, our patients come in wanting to know more about PRP hair therapy.

What is PRP hair therapy?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a safe, natural, effective treatment for hair loss that uses the body’s own healing cells, called platelets, to trigger new hair growth in areas of thinning. PRP therapy also extends the life of current hair follicles to reduce hair loss.

What are platelets?

Platelets are blood cells, like red and white blood cells. When you get a cut or scrape, platelets are some of the first cells that arrive on scene to stop the bleeding and start the healing process. These tiny cells contain chemical messengers called growth factors which stimulate dormant (ie, inactive, below the surface) hair follicles to start growing, while extending the life or your current, visible hair follicles.

How PRP therapy works:

Once we’ve done a thorough health screening to make sure you are a good candidate for PRP therapy, we draw a few small vials of blood from your arm. (Dr. Storm does this all day long, and uses small needles to make this process as comfortable as possible! She also dispenses dark chocolate on request, as she finds that this notably calms anxiety.)

The blood is then spun in a special centrifuge to separate out the platelets. Dr. Storm will collect these platelets and inject them into the scalp around areas of loss or thinning, which kick-starts the growth process.

Why PRP Therapy is Better Than The Alternatives:

Pros of PRP:

No goopy creams to apply daily. No medications to take that will disrupt your hormones or cause sexual dysfunction. No risk of allergic reaction (it’s your own cells!). PRP treatment simply concentrates your body’s own healing, regenerative cells and applies them to areas that could use extra growth and healing. We expect 40-50% improvement in thickness and fullness within 6 months.

Cons of other common treatments:

Finesteride: a medication take to reduce prostate size which is also used to treat hair loss. Generally taken for 6-12 months to notice a benefit. Side effects include: sexual dysfunction, decreased libido and ability to get an erection, decreased fertility, nipple discharge.

Rogaine (minoxidil): a medication used for the treatment of male-pattern hair loss, and sometimes for hair loss in women. Can cause fatigue, dizziness, low blood pressure. Must take daily for 3-6 months to see results.

Benefits of working with Dr. Storm:

Dr. Storm is a Naturopathic Doctor and a Regenerative Medicine/Anti-Aging specialist with 7 years of experience in injection therapies for joint, skin, and hair repair. Her background in natural medicine allows her to screen for underlying conditions (such as thyroid disorder, hormone imbalance, nutrient deficiencies, and stress conditions) that are either causing hair loss OR would prevent PRP therapy from being as effective as it can be. If there is cause for concern that these underlying conditions might be contributing to hair loss, Dr. Storm will help you find the root cause, and bring your body back into balance before starting PRP therapy. She will find and treat both the internal and external causes of hair loss, to get you the best results.

Dr. Storm is a skilled injector, and uses a very gentle technique to make the treatment process as fast, easy and painless as possible.

Are there studies to back the effectiveness of PRP therapy?

Yes!

This study reported that PRP treatment was linked to 30% improvement in growth and thickness in men who had previously tried hair growth medications without results. PRP both increased number of hair follicles and decreased loss of hair (measured by pull test – the ability to pull out hair follicles.)

This study found that PRP therapy was more effective than minoxidil (Rogaine). PRP was shown to prolong the anagen (active growth) cycle of hair follicles.

This study found significant improvements in hair growth, density, and thickness in women treated with PRP.

What else can PRP do?!

This gorgeous PRP golden serum can also:

  • Rejuvenate skin by increasing collagen production, which both tightens and strengthens maturing skin to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, and scarring.
  • Heal joint pain, arthritis, and sports injuries by increasing collagen and cartilage growth in the joint, ligaments, or tendons.
Who is a good candidate?

Most people, even those experiencing male or female pattern baldness. For those who have symptoms of thyroid or other hormone imbalances, Dr. Storm will test these hormones before treatment and support you in getting these values into healthy ranges before (or in some cases during) your PRP therapy protocol.

Can I shower after?

Best results are achieved with longer exposure of your hair follicles to the PRP serum, so it’s best to wait 12-24 hours before showering.

Is there any down time?

Nope. You can go right back to your normal activities. (Though we recommend wearing a hat after treatment.)

What are the side effects?

Occasional tenderness and bruising at injection sites. (Of note: those who have experienced dizziness or passing out when giving blood are likely not the best candidates for this therapy.)

Is it painful?

PRP therapy is a series of injections at the scalp. There is some discomfort and pain that comes  with treatment, BUT we have found a way to significantly decrease any tenderness experienced  during therapy. We use a small vibration tool to distract your nerves from feeling pain caused by the injections. This works wayyyy better than numbing creams. Even our needle-phobic patients have had an easy time with PRP therapy when using the vibration tool. If you’ve heard this treatment is painful, it’s because the right pain relief strategy wasn’t used.
